🎉 Welcome to Cancun

You made it.

Now you just need to get through the airport, survive the famous “Gauntlet,” avoid overpriced transportation, figure out ferries, and finally make it to the beach.

This guide is designed for travelers who want simple, realistic advice for getting through Cancun Airport and reaching their destination with less stress.

Whether you’re heading to Cancun Hotel Zone, Isla Mujeres, Holbox, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Puerto Morelos, or La Ruta de los Cenotes, this guide walks you through what actually happens after landing.

🛬 Before You Land

A few screenshots now can save airport stress later.

Screenshot Important Information

Before landing, screenshot:

  • hotel address
  • transportation confirmations
  • ferry information
  • driver instructions
  • reservation numbers

Airport Wi-Fi and cell service can become frustrating exactly when you need them most.

Carry-On Only vs. Checked Bags

Many experienced Cancun travelers now prefer carry-on only.

Why?

  • baggage waits can be long
  • delayed bags happen
  • ferry travel is easier without large luggage
  • mobility is easier during transfers

That said, if you’re staying longer, traveling with family, or bringing beach gear, checked bags may still make sense.

✈️ After Landing — Step by Step

Immigration first, then luggage, then customs.

1️⃣ The Long Walk

Depending on your gate and terminal, expect a decent walk after exiting the plane.

  • bathrooms may be crowded later
  • stay together if traveling in groups
  • airport staff may direct people quickly
  • don’t panic if things feel chaotic immediately
  • escalators, elevators, and moving walkways are not always nearby

You are not lost. This is normal Cancun Airport energy.

2️⃣ Immigration

For most U.S. travelers, tourist entry paperwork is usually already handled electronically through the airline fare system.

Lines vary dramatically depending on arrival time, number of international arrivals, and staffing.

Some travelers clear quickly. Others report spending significant time getting through immigration during extremely busy arrival periods.

  • have your passport ready before reaching the desk
  • remove hats and headphones
  • avoid using your phone during inspection
  • answer questions simply and directly
  • screenshot hotel and transportation information before landing

Most travelers clear without issues.

3️⃣ Baggage Claim

After immigration, you proceed to baggage claim. This is where Cancun Airport can slow down considerably.

Some travelers wait 10 minutes. Others wait 45+ minutes. During heavy arrival periods, some travelers report waits of 2+ hours.

  • many suitcases look identical
  • AirTags are becoming extremely common
  • double-check luggage tags before leaving
  • luggage carts may not always be nearby
  • soft bags are easier for ferry travel
🧳 Luggage Assistance & Tipping After exiting the airport, you will likely encounter workers offering luggage assistance outside the terminal. These workers are genuinely helpful and often assist travelers with heavy bags, especially families and larger groups. Some may immediately offer assistance, reach for luggage, or begin rolling bags while helping travelers move through the busy arrival area. If someone assists you with your luggage, be sure to tip for their help. Some airport workers rely heavily on tips as part of their income. If you do not want assistance, simply keep hold of your bags, politely decline, and continue toward your transportation area. A calm “No gracias” usually works perfectly.

🛃 Customs & Arrival Rules

After collecting your luggage, you proceed through customs.

Mexico’s customs and import rules can change at any time.

Items that frequently create problems for travelers include:

  • vape pens and e-cigarettes
  • illegal drugs
  • excessive tobacco or alcohol
  • restricted food or agricultural products
  • certain medications
  • drones or undeclared electronics

🚬 Cigarette Limits & Fines

Mexico’s 200-cigarette limit applies to the total amount physically in your possession during inspection.

That means:

  • even 1 cigarette over the limit can create problems
  • cigarettes belonging to a spouse, friend, or travel partner count toward your total if they are physically in your possession during inspection
  • opened packs, duty-free purchases, carry-ons, backpacks, purses, and checked bags may all be included in the total count

If you are carrying 201 cigarettes, you are over the limit.

If you are carrying your spouse’s or travel partner’s cigarettes in addition to your own, those cigarettes count toward your total during inspection.

Many travelers mistakenly assume opened packs do not count, duty-free does not count, or a few extra cigarettes will not matter.

Travelers have reported significant fines, confiscation, delays, and secondary inspections after exceeding tobacco limits.

Important customs disclaimerWe are not customs agents, attorneys, or government officials. Always verify current rules directly with Mexican customs authorities, your airline, and official government sources before traveling.
ImportantOnce you leave customs, returning to baggage claim is usually difficult or impossible.

🚨 The Gauntlet

The part everyone warns you about.

Immediately after customs, you enter the famous Cancun Airport “Gauntlet.” This is the hallway filled with transportation sellers, timeshare representatives, excursion salespeople, taxi offers, tourism desks, and “official-looking” helpers.

Some are legitimate businesses. Some are aggressively selling overpriced services.

You’ll hear: “Transportation?” “Taxi?” “Where are you staying?” “Welcome my friend!”

The golden ruleKeep walking unless you intentionally booked with them. Most legitimate pre-booked transportation companies wait outside the terminal holding your name sign or sending pickup instructions.

💵 Money, ATM, Credit Card & Phone Tips

Small decisions here can save money and stress.

Currency Exchange

Airport exchange counters usually offer weaker exchange rates.

For many travelers, bank ATMs are often easier and provide better exchange rates.

When possible:

  • use ATMs attached to actual banks instead of standalone machines
  • carry at least two forms of payment
  • check whether your bank or credit card company wants advance notice of international travel
  • know your card PIN before leaving home

Helpful ATM Tip

When using a Mexican ATM, you may be asked if you want the transaction converted to U.S. dollars.

Many experienced travelers decline the ATM’s conversion offer and choose to be charged in Mexican pesos instead.

This allows your own bank or credit card company to perform the currency conversion, which often results in a better exchange rate.

Always review the ATM screen carefully before accepting the transaction.

📱 SIM Cards & Internet

You’ll see SIM card booths throughout the airport.

You may not need one if your phone already supports Verizon TravelPass, AT&T roaming, T-Mobile international, or eSIM service.

Airport Wi-Fi exists, but reliability varies.

⛴️ Isla Mujeres

To reach Isla Mujeres, you first need transportation to Puerto Juárez ferry terminal.

For many visitors, the excitement really starts once they arrive at the ferry dock.

You’ll usually experience:

  • travelers hauling beach bags
  • golf cart rental signs everywhere
  • turquoise water
  • the sound of ferry horns echoing across the water
  • people already in vacation mode before boarding

The ferry ride itself is short, but for many travelers it becomes the moment the vacation finally feels real.

Ferry PricingUltramar ferry: approximately $17 USD / 290 MXN one way, or $34 USD / 580 MXN round trip for adults.
ImportantAirport transportation normally does not include ferry tickets unless clearly stated.

Travel TimeApproximately 30–40 minutes to Puerto Juárez depending on traffic, plus ferry time.

🌴 Playa del Carmen

After leaving the airport, many travelers get their first glimpse of the Riviera Maya during the drive south.

You’ll usually experience:

  • jungle and coastline views
  • busy tourist areas
  • beach clubs
  • traffic circles
  • the growing excitement of finally reaching Playa del Carmen

For many visitors, Playa del Carmen becomes the transportation hub for exploring the Riviera Maya, Cozumel, cenotes, and beyond.

Private Transfer OptionPrivate transfer: approximately $70–95+ USD / 1,210–1,642+ MXN.

🌊 Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is one of the easiest beach destinations to reach from Cancun Airport.

The atmosphere feels very different from Cancun’s Hotel Zone.

You’ll usually experience:

  • a quieter pace
  • local restaurants
  • fishing boats
  • fewer crowds
  • a more relaxed beach-town feel

For travelers looking to slow down, Puerto Morelos often becomes an unexpected favorite.

Shared Shuttle OptionShared shuttle: approximately $22–25 USD / 380–432 MXN.
Private Transfer OptionPrivate transfer: approximately $45–70+ USD / 778–1,210+ MXN.

🦩 Holbox

Holbox requires two steps: transportation to Chiquilá, then the ferry to Holbox.

For many travelers, the journey to Holbox becomes part of the adventure.

The drive north passes through smaller towns, jungle areas, roadside fruit stands, and stretches of highway where you’ll likely spot the famous jaguar crossing signs along the route.

Who knows... maybe you’ll even see a real one. 😎

Once you reach Chiquilá, the atmosphere shifts completely:

  • ferry traffic
  • seafood spots
  • street vendors
  • parking lot workers waving you toward their lot
  • travelers already shifting into island time
Ferry PricingChiquilá → Holbox ferry: approximately $18–19 USD / 330 MXN one way for adults.
ImportantTransportation to Chiquilá and the ferry ticket are usually separate costs.

Weather and ferry conditions can occasionally affect schedules, so it’s smart to avoid extremely tight connections.

🐠 Cozumel

Cozumel requires two steps: transportation to Playa del Carmen, then the ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel.

The trip to Cozumel feels very different from the route to Holbox.

Instead of jungle highways and small pueblos, the journey usually includes:

  • the Riviera Maya coastline
  • busy Playa del Carmen energy
  • beach traffic
  • ferry terminals
  • ocean views heading across to the island

The ferry crossing itself is part of the experience for many visitors.

Ferry PricingPlaya del Carmen → Cozumel passenger ferry: approximately $18 USD / 320 MXN one way for adults.
ImportantAirport transportation to Playa del Carmen and the Cozumel ferry ticket are separate costs.

On windy days, the ride can get rough, but on calmer days the views approaching Cozumel are beautiful.

🚆 Tren Maya

Useful for some trips, but not always the simplest airport-to-hotel solution.

Tren Maya is Mexico’s passenger rail system connecting Cancun Airport, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid, Mérida, Chichén Itzá, and other Yucatán destinations.

Best ForMulti-city trips, inland Yucatán travel, and Mérida or Valladolid itineraries.
Less Useful ForDirect resort arrivals, same-day ferry connections, and travelers carrying large beach luggage.

For many beach travelers, ADO and private transfers are still simpler.

Always verify current schedules before planning around train timing.

⛴️ Ferry Tips

Ferries are fun, but they add another step to arrival day.

Isla Mujeres

Most visitors use Ultramar ferries from Puerto Juárez.

  • arrive early during busy periods
  • keep tickets accessible
  • upper deck has the best views
  • windy crossings can feel rough

Holbox

Ferry timing can shift due to weather, crowds, and conditions.

Try not to schedule extremely tight transfer connections.

🌮 Things People Learn the Hard Way

A few final truths before you go.

  • airport taxis are usually expensive
  • Cancun traffic surprises many first-time visitors
  • ferry days take longer than expected
  • sunscreen near tourist beaches costs more
  • golf cart traffic on Isla Mujeres is chaos
  • Mexico moves slower than many Americans expect
  • one margarita at Soggy Peso somehow becomes three
