Mexico Ferry Guide

Ferries are part of the adventure. They are also where travelers learn whether they packed too much.

Start Here

Flying into Cancun first? Begin with the Cancun Airport Guide, then use these guides to plan the fun parts without overthinking every mile.

This guide keeps transportation simple on purpose. For detailed arrival steps, airport transportation choices, and first-day advice, use the Cancun Airport Guide. Verify current schedules, prices, and rules before travel.

Before You Plan a Ferry Day

Ferry routes are usually simple, but schedules, pricing, weather, and lines can change. Do not build a travel day where one late ferry ruins everything. Give yourself breathing room, especially when flights or hotel check-ins are involved.

Carry small cash, keep your ticket handy, and assume boarding areas may feel hotter and busier than they look in travel videos.

Isla Mujeres Ferry

Most Cancun-area visitors use the Puerto Juárez ferry area. Ultramar is the operator travelers most commonly recognize for Isla Mujeres. Check current times directly before travel.

This is usually one of the easier ferry experiences, but weekends, holidays, and peak arrival times can still create lines.

Holbox Ferry

For Holbox, travelers go to Chiquilá and cross to the island. The local ferry names to know are Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos.

Chiquilá can be hot and busy. Parking, luggage, and timing all feel easier when you arrive with cash and a little patience.

Cozumel Ferry

For Cozumel, travelers usually depart from Playa del Carmen. Ultramar and Winjet are the main passenger ferry names travelers see for this route.

This crossing can feel rougher on windy days. If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare before boarding, not after the boat starts moving.

Ferry Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do check schedules the day before travel.
  • Do arrive earlier on weekends and holidays.
  • Do keep luggage simple when possible.
  • Do bring water and sun protection for waiting areas.
  • Do not cut ferry timing close to a flight.
  • Do not assume weather will cooperate just because your spreadsheet does.
